How to calculate a discount
Multiply the original price by the percent off and subtract it: 25% off $80 is $20 off, so the sale price is $60. The calculator also handles an extra discount on top, such as a coupon on sale items, and adds sales tax to show what you will really pay at the register.
Stacked discounts are not added together
When two discounts are applied one after the other, the second one is taken from the already-reduced price. 25% off and then an extra 10% off equals 32.5% off in total, not 35%. The calculator shows the true combined discount.
Smart shopping tips
- Compare the final price, not the percent off; a bigger discount on a higher list price may cost more.
- Check price history and other stores before buying.
- Remember sales tax and shipping when comparing online and in-store prices.
